Drew Levinson presents "Paramount Pictures Film Exchange," about the former Pittsburgh site of Paramount Pictures. Centered around the deteriorated building that still maintains its original architecture and details from the 1920s. A film exchange typically contained a film library and private screening room for exhibitors AKA theater owners to watch a film before booking it. The building was finished in 1926 or 1927 according to Polk's Pittsburgh City Directory. Film created for the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh. Features Dawn Keezer, Peter Rosenfeld, Ed Blank, Albert M. Tannler, and Anne E. Nelson, Esq.
Adam Preset, an IT Technical Director at the University of Pennsylvania, talks about their side-by-side deployment of MS Exchange and Zimbra- including a TCO analysis showing which system has a lower per-user cost. (Run time 3:21).
The ACA allows for three models of health insurance Exchange marketplaces. PA will follow what is referred to as a Federally Facilitated Exchange, in which the federal government -- mainly through the Dept of HHS -- operates nearly all functions of the Exchange.

BUCKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA — A Pennsylvania man has confessed to the murders of four young men, whom he buried in a mass grave on his family’s property. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that on July 5, Jimi Patrick disappeared in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Two days later, Dean Finocchiaro, Thomas Meo, and Mark Sturgis also went missing. On the night he disappeared, license plate readers spotted Meo’s Nissan Maxima sedan tailing a pickup driven by Cosmo DiNardo. The next day, DiNardo tried to sell the sedan to a friend for $500. According to the New York Times, police searching for the four men tracked Finocchiaro’s cellphone signal to the DiNardo farm, and found Sturgis’ Nissan Altima outside a shopping center down the road. Meo’s Nissan was recovered about a mile away from the...

President Donald Trump continues his sales pitch for his administration’s tax reform proposal as he makes his way to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to deliver remarks on the plan. The event will take place at 5:45 PM ET and will feature a backdrop of big rigs as the president will cast the proposal as being extremely beneficial to truckers. In an excerpt released by the White House, Trump will say that “[n]othing gets done in America without the hardworking men and women of the trucking industry,” adding that when their “trucks are moving, America is growing. ‘America first’ means putting American truckers first.” With experts and analysts stating that the tax plan will not provide much of a benefit to the middle class while providing large tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy, the preside...
If you live on the East Coast and you've got a free day, chances are you can experience a piece of the Appalachian Trail. And that's exactly what I did for this adventure. I chose a section of the AT within a couple hours or so drive, atop Blue Mountain in Eastern Pennsylvania, just North of Allentown. For those of you who watched our "PA Zombie Preparation Hike" video where we hit the AT trail-head at Port Clinton and checked out the Pinnacle, this is about 10 miles north of that section. I used my 2012 edition of the A.T. Guide by David "AWOL" Miller to choose this section as well as the parking area via the GPS coordinates listed in the book. If you don't have it already, I highly recommend this book if you plan on exploring the Appalachian Trail. It's a great resource. The parki...

Many fire-dependent ecosystems in the eastern US are converting to fire-intolerant vegetation communities due to fire-suppression practices implemented in the 20th century. Where available, fire-scarred trees offer valuable information on historical fire regimes which can provide a scientific foundation for natural community restoration activities. In this study, we discuss 300-400 years of fire frequency, severity, and seasonality based on data from 8 sites across the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania. Fire regimes are reported in context of human settlement trends, climate records, and current management goals.
On the heels of the one-year anniversary of its 4G LTE service rollout, Verizon Wireless has granted Pocketnow exclusive access to one of their switches in southeastern Pennsylvania. The switch (or Mobile Telephone Switching Office -- MTSO) is a hub of Verizon's network in the Philadelphia tri-state area: it's what connects the towers in the region and processes all voice and data calls. The switch, which is a building filled with miles of fiber optic cable, a battery backup system and a generator system, dozens of servers, and a control room that monitors precise data as it pertains to the performance and stability of the system, is a marvel of engineering and technology. We also get to witness Verizon's obsession with reliability of their network. Each and every component is redundant...
History books traditionally depict the pre-Columbus Americas as a pristine wilderness where small native villages lived in harmony with nature. But scientific evidence tells a very different story: When Columbus stepped ashore in 1492, millions of people were already living there. America wasn't exactly a New World, but a very old one whose inhabitants had built a vast infrastructure of cities, orchards, canals and causeways. The English brought honeybees to the Americas for honey, but the bees pollinated orchards along the East Coast. Thanks to the feral honeybees, many of the plants the Europeans brought, like apples and peaches, proliferated. Some 12,000 years ago, North American mammoths, ancient horses, and other large mammals vanished. The first horses in America since the Pleistoce...

This session of the 2016 Pennsylvania Department of Education Data Summit provided an overview of the recently altered federal education landscape, including what has changed—and what hasn’t—in the wake of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The four major areas of focus include accountability, assessment, educator certification, and educator evaluation. Participants reflected on the specific and important roles they play in Pennsylvania’s accountability system and gained a better understanding of why data matter in an evolving state and federal landscape.
